Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)

Red Dead Redemption 2, developed by Rockstar Games, is the sequel to the highly acclaimed 2010 game Red Dead Redemption. Announced in October 2016, the game quickly became one of the most anticipated games of the generation. Originally planned to release in the second half of 2017, the game was eventually delayed twice, first to the beginning of 2018, and then to the end of 2018. These delays only served to increase the gaming community’s anticipation and excitement. Finally, on October 26th, 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 released to almost universal acclaim.

One of the most impressive parts of Red…

The Arztotzkan Flag — Papers, Please (2013)

Papers, Please, released in 2013 by video game designer Lucas Pope, is unique, even among other video games. Some of the themes that the game incorporates are commonly explored in the medium. However, one of its themes, that of immigration and immigration systems, are more rare among video games. Additionally, the gameplay, or the way the player interacts with the game’s systems and rules, are unique.

This weekend marked the beginning of the closed beta for Ubisoft’s newest Tom Clancy game, The Division 2. The game is set in Washington D.C. after a bio-terrorist released a weaponized version of the smallpox virus as a means of population control. The player character is an agent of The Division, a classified unit of soldiers that live normal lives until they are needed. In the event of an extreme emergency, Division agents are to work to restore government control.

Kirstin Dunst and Orlando Bloom in “Elizabethtown” (2005)

The Manic Pixie Dream Girl (MPDG) is a trope that has existed in media, art, and literature for a long time; however, the term was only coined in 2007 by film critic, Nathin Rabin. In his review of the Orlando Bloom film Elizabethtown, Rabin described Kirsten Dunst’s stewardess character as “a character type [he likes] to call the Manic Pixie Dream Girl…The Manic Pixie Dream Girl exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.” In a later article, Rabin laments his coining of the…

Games in 2018 had some really good and varied soundtracks, so much so that I found it nearly impossible to rank them. Because of this, I’ve included my favorites in no particular order.

Toni Morrison’s “Beloved”

Toni Morrison’s novels Beloved and Jazz both tell stories that involve African-American men discovering and claiming their senses of masculinity. Some critics, such as Stanley Crouch, argue that Morrison misrepresents historical events in order to push her own personal feminist agenda that demonizes black men and elevates black women. I will be examining how Paul D in Beloved and Joe Trace in Jazz come to discover their definitions of masculinity, and I expect to be able to challenge critics…

Tetris Effect is the latest game from Lumines and Rez creator, Tetsuya Mizuguchi. It was revealed at E3 over the summer, and I won’t lie, the trailer got me emotional for reasons I can’t really explain. It’s just a narrator describing the Tetris effect, a pattern of hallucinations or behaviors that occur after an extend amount of time engaging in a repetitive activity (you know, like playing Tetris), with music and trippy art in the background. But for some reason, it felt like something special.

I love Tetris, so naturally I’ve been really looking forward to this. Today, Sony…

The Haunted Forest

Shortly after the launch of Destiny 2, developer Bungie began teasing their first expansion: Curse of Osiris. The expansion looked promising. Players would explore a new area on Mercury, where they would also play through a story campaign involving one of the lore’s most enigmatic figures, Osiris; however, one of the most promising parts of these reveals was an area called the Infinite Forest. Bungie teased this area by showing off some procedural generation tech that they had been working on to create areas made out of a selection of hundreds of parts.
